Quick answer India Post runs about 1.65 lakh post offices — more than any other postal service in the world — and nearly 9 in 10 are in rural India. It became a single national department in 1854, introduced the PIN code in 1972 and Speed Post in 1986, and in 2025 folded Registered Post into Speed Post.

1. It is the largest postal network in the world
India had 1,64,999 post offices on 31 March 2025 — 1,39,908 branch post offices and 25,091 departmental post offices. On average, one post office serves about 7,300 people. No other country has as many post offices.
2. Nearly 9 in 10 post offices are in villages
Of those offices, 1,49,385 are rural and 15,614 are urban. For many villages the post office is also the nearest place to save money, receive pensions and government payments, or send a parcel — which is why India Post is often described as the country's widest distribution channel.
3. The national department dates back to 1854
India Post as a single department began on 1 October 1854, with a network of 701 post offices under a Director General. Lord Dalhousie's reforms introduced uniform postage rates across the country, so a letter cost the same whatever the distance.
4. A law from 1898 governed the post for more than 125 years
The Post Office Act, 2023 came into force on 18 June 2024 and replaced the Indian Post Office Act of 1898. Among other changes, it ended the government's exclusive right to carry letters (private couriers had long operated anyway) while keeping India Post's exclusive right to issue postage stamps.
5. The PIN code was born on Independence Day, 1972
The six-digit Postal Index Number (PIN) was introduced on 15 August 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar, then an additional secretary in the Ministry of Communications. It was designed to remove confusion caused by duplicate place names, spelling variations and different languages.
The first digit shows one of nine zones. Digits 1–8 are geographical regions; 9 is reserved for the Army Postal Service.
6. Speed Post is almost 40 years old
India Post launched Speed Post on 1 August 1986 as its fast, tracked service for letters and parcels. Today it is the service most people mean when they say "track my India Post parcel" — you can track a Speed Post article here.
7. The world's highest post office is in Himachal Pradesh
The post office at Hikkim, in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, is listed by Guinness World Records as the highest post office in the world, at 4,724 metres (15,500 ft) above sea level. It opened in November 1983 and serves a village of about 600 people — and a steady stream of travellers who post a card from the top of the world.
8. A post office floats on Dal Lake
In Srinagar, a houseboat moored on Dal Lake works as a full post office: you can buy stamps, post letters and send parcels. It is widely described as the only floating post office in the world and is a popular stop for visitors.
9. Registered Post is now part of Speed Post
From 1 September 2025, India Post stopped offering Registered Post as a separate service and merged it into Speed Post. Registered Post volumes had been falling for years — from 244.4 million articles in 2011–12 to 184.6 million in 2019–20. Its key features (delivery to the addressee only, proof of delivery) are now offered with Speed Post.
10. Speed Post got its first price revision in 13 years
From 1 October 2025, India Post revised Speed Post tariffs for the first time since October 2012. Under the revised tariff, sending up to 50 g starts at ₹19 for local delivery and ₹47 for longer distances. The same update added OTP-based delivery, online payment, SMS delivery updates and an optional registration facility (₹5 per item plus GST). Check the counter or India Post's website for the current rate before you post.
11. Next-day "24 Speed Post" arrived in 2026
On 17 March 2026, India Post launched 24 Speed Post, promising delivery the next day (D+1) with a money-back guarantee for delays. The first phase covered Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
12. Your address now has a digital twin: DIGIPIN
On 27 May 2025, the Department of Posts launched DIGIPIN, a geo-coded address system. It divides India into a grid of roughly 4 m × 4 m squares and gives each square a 10-character code based on latitude and longitude. It was developed with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre, and is meant to help deliveries reach places where written addresses are vague. DIGIPIN works alongside the PIN code; it doesn't replace it.
How a Speed Post tracking number works
India Post uses the international S10 format set by the Universal Postal Union. A number has 13 characters:
| Part | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 2 letters | EE | Service — E = Speed Post / EMS, R = registered, C = parcel |
| 8 digits | 12345678 | The article's serial number |
| 1 digit | 5 | A check digit, calculated from the eight digits |
| 2 letters | IN | Country of origin — India |
So EE123456785IN is a valid-looking Speed Post number. The check digit catches most typing mistakes: if one digit is wrong, the check usually fails. CheckMyOrder verifies it before identifying a number as India Post.
Common scan events you will see while tracking (exact wording varies):
| Event | What it means |
|---|---|
| Item Booked | Accepted at the counter or pickup point |
| Item Bagged | Sorted into a bag for the next office or hub |
| Item Dispatched | The bag has left for the next office |
| Item Received | Arrived at a processing hub or the delivery post office |
| Out for Delivery | With the postman for delivery |
| Item Delivered | Delivered — note the time and place |
