Summary

Key findings

Nine things the data says about parcels in India right now.

  1. 1

Online shopping has doubled in five years

India's e-retail market reached about $65–66 billion in 2025, growing 19–21% a year, with 290–300 million shoppers — twice as many as five years ago.[1]

  2. 2

    Small towns now drive growth

Tier-2+ cities brought about half of the new e-retail orders in 2025 and roughly 65% of new shoppers. In the first two festive-sale days of 2026, nearly two-thirds of shoppers came from Tier-2 cities and rural areas.[1],[2]

  3. 3

Festive peaks are now ~6× a normal day

Redseer estimated ₹24,000 crore of sales and 80–90 million orders across platforms on 8–9 October 2026 — about six times a business-as-usual day. Those orders all become parcels within days.[2]

  4. 4

Quick commerce is a separate delivery world

Quick commerce was $10–11 billion in 2025 (16–17% of e-retail) and is projected to reach $65–70 billion by 2030 — orders tracked inside each app, not by courier tracking numbers.[1]

  5. 5

Not receiving the product is the #1 complaint

E-commerce complaints on the National Consumer Helpline rose from ~2.2 lakh (2021) to ~5.1 lakh (2025). In 2025 'non-delivery of products' (79,818) overtook wrong deliveries (75,426) as the largest category.[8]

  6. 6

Cash on delivery still dominates — and drives returns

Industry datasets put COD at roughly 60–65% of orders. Around a quarter of COD parcels return to the seller unopened (RTO), against 2–3% of prepaid parcels.[13],[14]

  7. 7

    Courier scams follow the parcels

Indians reported ₹22,845 crore lost to cyber fraud in 2024, about three times 2023. Courier-themed scripts — 'parcel on hold', fake customs calls, and *401# call-forwarding — are among the most common.[10],[11],[12]

  8. 8

India Post is the network that reaches everyone

With 1,64,999 post offices (about 90% rural), India Post reaches places private networks don't. Registered Post was folded into Speed Post from 1 September 2025, and DIGIPIN (May 2025) adds a ~4 m precise address code.[4],[5],[7]

  9. 9

Most courier numbers can't be told apart by format alone

In our analysis of 26 couriers, only 12 use a public number format we can recognise, and only 2 (India Post and UPS) include a check digit. Plain digit numbers overlap — a 14-digit number may be Delhivery or XpressBees.[CheckMyOrder data]

1 · The market

More shoppers, more parcels, more towns

E-retail in India more than doubled in five years. Most new shoppers now live outside the big metros — where last-mile delivery is hardest and tracking questions are most common.

E-retail and quick commerce, 2025 vs 2030 (USD)[1]

  • E-retail 2025$65–66 bn
  • E-retail 2030 (proj.)$170–180 bn
  • Quick commerce 2025$10–11 bn
  • Quick commerce 2030 (proj.)$65–70 bn

2 · Peaks

Festive sales: six normal days of orders in one

Sale days create parcel waves that take a week or more to clear. That's when 'no update for 3 days' messages — and courier scams — spike.

80–90 mn

orders on 8–9 Oct 2026, the first two festive-sale days[2]

The next wave is weddings. For the 2025 season, traders’ body CAIT estimated about 46 lakh weddings between 1 November and 14 December, worth ₹6.5 lakh crore in business[15]. Planning to order online? See our wedding-season delivery planner.

3 · The network

Who actually carries the parcels

Private express networks move most e-commerce parcels; India Post reaches almost every corner of the country.

For loss or damage, India Post pays double the Speed Post charges or ₹1,000, whichever is less; for delay, the postage is refunded. Private couriers cap liability unless the value is declared and insured. How to claim

PIN code vs DIGIPIN[7]

The 6-digit PIN code (since 1972) routes a parcel to a delivery area; the optional 10-character DIGIPIN points to a ~4 m square — useful where houses have no numbers. DIGIPIN explained

4 · Original analysis · CheckMyOrder data

Can a tracking number tell you the courier?

Often not. We analysed the public number formats of the 26 couriers in our tracker — the rules our auto-detection uses — to see how many can be identified from the number alone.

12 of 26

couriers have a public number format we can recognise

2 of 26

include a check digit (India Post and UPS) — typos can be caught before searching

14

couriers use formats that vary too much to detect — the shop or receipt must name them

Examples are illustrative, not real shipments. Formats are heuristics from public information; couriers can change them. Where numbers collide

  • 14 digits → Delhivery (13–14) or XpressBees (14–15)
  • 12 digits → FedEx or Trackon
  • 10 / 11 digits → DHL Express / Blue Dart — but also many order and phone numbers

What it means for you

If a tracker asks you to choose the courier, the number is ambiguous — check the order page or SMS for the courier’s name. Got only an order ID? That’s a different number: order ID vs tracking number.

5 · Payments & returns

Cash on delivery: popular, and the biggest cause of returns

Industry datasets agree on the shape, if not the exact numbers. Treat these as estimates.

Share of orders paid by COD[13],[14]

COD ~60–65%
Prepaid

Parcels returned to the seller (RTO)

COD~24–26%
Prepaid~2–3%

Why it matters

  • Every refused COD parcel is shipped twice — out and back — and its cost lands on sellers and, eventually, prices.
  • Platforms respond with COD fees, order-value limits and COD blocks on some PIN codes.
  • Clear tracking updates are one of the cheapest ways to cut refusals: buyers who know a parcel is coming accept it.

6 · When it goes wrong

Non-delivery is now the #1 online shopping complaint

E-commerce made up 36.1% of all grievances on the National Consumer Helpline in 2023-24 — more than any other sector.

  • Debited without consent12,614

Shops must acknowledge a complaint within 48 hours and resolve it within a month under the E-Commerce Rules, 2020[17]. What to do when a parcel is stuck

7 · Scams

Courier scams grow with the parcels

Waiting for a parcel makes people trust messages about it. Scammers know that.

Reported losses to all cyber fraud (₹ crore)[10]

  • 2023₹7,465 cr
  • 2024₹22,845 cr

About 3× in a year (+206%). Self-reported losses on the national cybercrime portal.

The three courier scripts to know

  1. 1. “Parcel on hold — pay ₹25.” SMS with a fake courier link that harvests card details and OTPs.
  2. 2. “Dial *401# to confirm delivery.” Switches on call forwarding so bank OTP calls reach the scammer; the Department of Telecom has warned against it[12]. Rajasthan police logged 1,500+ such courier complaints in two months[11].
  3. 3. “Customs seized your parcel.” Fake officers demand money — sometimes as a “digital arrest”.

FAQ

Questions about the report

Can I cite the India Courier Tracking Report 2026?

Yes — it's free to cite with a link to this page. Please also credit the original source we list for each external figure (for example Bain & Company, Redseer or the Lok Sabha reply).

How many online shoppers are there in India in 2026?

About 290–300 million, according to Bain & Company and Flipkart's How India Shops Online 2026, roughly double the number five years earlier.

What is the most common online shopping complaint in India?

In 2025, 'non-delivery of products' — 79,818 complaints on the National Consumer Helpline — ahead of wrong products delivered (75,426), per a Lok Sabha reply.

What share of Indian online orders are cash on delivery?

Industry datasets put it at roughly 60–65% of orders. About a quarter of COD parcels return to the seller (RTO), versus 2–3% of prepaid parcels. These are industry estimates, not official statistics.

Why can't a tracking number always tell you the courier?

Many Indian couriers use plain numeric tracking numbers of similar lengths, and only a few (India Post, UPS) include a check digit. A 12-digit number, for example, could be FedEx or Trackon. That's why trackers sometimes ask you to pick the courier.

How much is lost to cyber fraud in India?

The Ministry of Home Affairs told the Lok Sabha that ₹22,845.73 crore was reported lost to cyber fraud in 2024, up from ₹7,465.18 crore in 2023. Victims should call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in.
