What Is an AWB Number? (And Where to Find Yours)

The AWB is the number couriers use to track your parcel. Here is what it looks like and where to find it.

The short answer

An AWB (air waybill) number is the reference number a courier assigns to a parcel when the shipment is booked. You use it to track the parcel on the courier's website or on a tracking tool like CheckMyOrder.

Indian couriers use several names for the same idea:

  • AWB or waybill number — common with Delhivery, Blue Dart, XpressBees and most express couriers
  • Consignment number — used by DTDC and India Post
  • Tracking ID — used by many shopping apps
  • LR number (lorry receipt) — used for surface freight and larger B2B shipments

The name "air waybill" comes from air cargo, but couriers use it for parcels that travel by road too.

What an AWB number looks like

There is no single format. Each courier uses its own, and some use more than one. A few common patterns:

Courier Common format Example shape
India Post (Speed Post, registered) 2 letters + 9 digits + "IN" EE123456785IN
Blue Dart 11 digits 12345678901
DTDC often 1 letter + 8 digits (other formats exist) D12345678
Ekart (Flipkart) starts with FMPC or FMPP FMPC1234567890
Amazon (Amazon.in deliveries) varies — copy it from Track package —

These are common patterns, not official specifications, and couriers change formats over time. If CheckMyOrder can't tell which courier a number belongs to, it asks you to choose instead of guessing.

Where to find your AWB number

  1. Shipping SMS or email. When a seller dispatches your order, you usually receive a message that names the courier and includes the tracking number or a tracking link.
  2. The shopping app. Open the order, tap Track or Order details, and look for "Tracking ID", "AWB" or the courier's name with a number next to it.
  3. The parcel label. The number is printed on the label, usually next to a barcode.
  4. Ask the seller. Small sellers on Instagram or WhatsApp should share the courier name and AWB once they ship.

AWB number vs order ID

Your order ID is created by the shop when you pay. The AWB is created by the courier when the parcel is booked for delivery — often a day or two later. Courier systems only know the AWB, so an order ID won't work on a courier's tracker or on CheckMyOrder.

Common problems

  • "No information found" right after ordering: many couriers only show updates after the first scan at pickup. Wait 24 hours and try again.
  • The number has spaces or dashes. CheckMyOrder removes spaces automatically. Copy the number exactly as it appears.
  • You received an AWB from an unknown sender. Be careful: fake "parcel on hold" messages are a common scam. Never pay a fee or share an OTP through a link in an unexpected message.

Track it

Paste your AWB into the tracker on our home page. We'll identify the courier where the format is distinctive, show live status where we can, and otherwise link you to the courier's official tracker.
