Courier Tracking Status Meanings: A to Z Guide for India

Manifested? Bagged? NDR? A plain-English glossary of the tracking statuses Indian couriers use — and which ones need you to do something.

Quick answer Most tracking statuses just describe where a parcel is: booked, picked up, in transit, out for delivery, delivered. You only need to act on a few: undelivered / NDR (the courier couldn't deliver), address issue, held at customs and RTO (being returned to the seller).

A parcel's journey in five stages

Stage Typical statuses Do you need to act?
1. Booked Order placed, shipment created, manifested, pickup scheduled No — wait for pickup
2. Picked up Picked up, in-scanned, received at origin No
3. On the way In transit, bagged, dispatched, arrived at hub, connected No — unless it's stuck for days
4. Near you Reached destination city, at delivery centre, out for delivery Keep your phone reachable
5. Finished Delivered — or undelivered, RTO Act if it says undelivered or RTO

Courier names for each step differ, but almost all follow this pattern.

Before pickup

Order placed / Shipment created / Manifested — The seller has booked the shipment and the courier has generated a tracking number (AWB), but the courier doesn't have the parcel yet. It's normal for the tracking page to show little or nothing at this stage.

Pickup scheduled / Pickup pending — A pickup from the seller is planned. If this lasts several days, the seller hasn't handed the parcel over; contact the seller, not the courier.

Pickup failed / Pickup cancelled — The courier couldn't collect it (seller not ready, closed, wrong pickup address). The seller usually rebooks.

On the way

Picked up / In-scanned — The courier has the parcel. From here, tracking usually updates at every hub.

In transit — Moving between facilities. This can last from hours to several days; no news within "in transit" is normal.

Bagged / Connected / Dispatched — The parcel has been sorted into a bag or load for the next hub and has left (or is about to leave).

Arrived at hub / Reached facility — Scanned in at a sorting hub on the way.

Misrouted — Sent to the wrong hub by mistake. The courier re-routes it; expect a delay of one to a few days.

Shipment delayed / Delay due to unforeseen circumstances — Weather, strikes, traffic restrictions, festival volumes or operational problems. Nothing for you to do unless the delay drags on.

Near you

Reached destination city / At delivery centre — The parcel is at the local office that will deliver it.

Out for delivery (OFD) — With a delivery agent today. Keep your phone reachable and, for cash-on-delivery, keep the payment ready.

Delivery rescheduled — The delivery was moved to another day, either because you asked or because the agent couldn't complete the route.

Delivery problems — act on these

Undelivered / Delivery attempted / NDR — NDR stands for Non-Delivery Report: the agent tried but couldn't deliver. The reason is often shown — "customer not available", "address incomplete", "customer refused", "premises closed". Couriers usually try again, but after a limited number of failed attempts the parcel is returned.

What to do Call the courier's customer care or reply to the courier's SMS/IVR to confirm your address and a convenient time. For marketplace orders, you can often request a re-attempt from the order page. Act the same day — an unanswered NDR is the most common route to an RTO.

Address issue / Incomplete address — The agent couldn't find the address. Share a landmark and a reachable phone number with the courier.

Customer refused — Recorded when the parcel is declined at the door. If you didn't refuse it, complain to the courier and the seller immediately.

On hold / Held at facility — Kept at a hub or delivery centre, sometimes for an address check, payment or documents. Contact the courier to find out why.

Returns

RTO initiated — Return to Origin: the parcel is being sent back to the seller, usually after failed attempts or a refusal.

RTO in transit / RTO delivered — On its way back / received back by the seller. For prepaid orders, the refund usually follows once the seller receives it.

Return pickup / Reverse pickup — Different from RTO: this is a return you requested, collected from your address.

International statuses

Shipment exported / Departed from origin country — It has left the sender's country.

Arrived in destination country / Received at office of exchange — It has reached India (for postal items, the foreign post office handling international mail).

Held at customs / Customs clearance pending — Waiting for customs checks or for duty to be paid. Check whether the courier needs your KYC document or a payment.

Customs cleared / Released — Cleared to move on to domestic delivery.

Statuses that mean "no news yet"

If a number shows "no information found", "invalid" or nothing at all, it is often too new: many couriers only show data after the first scan at pickup. Wait 24 hours and try again — and make sure you're using the courier's tracking number (AWB), not the shop's order ID.

Frequently asked questions

Why hasn't my tracking updated for two days?

Parcels are scanned at hubs, not on the road. A long truck journey or a weekend can mean no new scans for a day or two. If there's no update for four or five days, contact the seller or courier.

What's the difference between NDR and RTO?

NDR means a delivery attempt failed — the parcel is still coming to you. RTO means it is now going back to the seller.

Is "delivered" final?

Yes. If tracking says delivered but you don't have the parcel, report it to the courier and the seller the same day.
